This Friday is the 25th anniversary of the passage of California’s Proposition 187. The goal of 187 was to make people living in the country illegally ineligible for public benefits. The Trump administration has been trying to take this effort even further to include those seeking asylum in the U.S.

Gustavo Arellano is joining us today to talk about the atmosphere in California when Prop. 187 passed and its resonance today. Arellano is a features writer for the LA Times. His beat is Southern California, the Western U.S. and beyond.

In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the passage of Proposition 187, Arellano is producing a podcast for the LA Times in collaboration with Futuro Media, which also produces the weekly public radio program Latino USA.

For many years, Arellano worked at OC Weekly as both an investigative reporter and editor. He’s a lifelong resident of Orange County and the child of two Mexican immigrants, one whom came to the U.S. illegally.
