Cody Drabble / Capital Public Radio

A woman forbidden to remarry by her jealous brothers leads to a family torn apart by greed and envy. It’s a story as old as Shakespeare, and it’s playing out on stage in Sacramento. The Forgotten Theatre Company  is performing “The Duchess of Malfi” this weekend and next at California Stage. The production runs from June 8 through July 1.

First performed by Shakespeare’s theatre company The King’s Men, “The Duchess of Malfi” was written by John Webster and features challenging adult themes and macabre theatrical effects. Even though it was written hundreds of years ago, the play has some relevant parallells to today’s #MeToo Movement.
