In the summer of 1999, a wave of hate crimes washed across the United States. In Northern California, three synagogues in Sacramento were firebombed and two gay men in Redding were murdered in their home.

Some media outlets dubbed it "the Summer of Hate." Since then, Sacramento leaders have been working to open a Unity Center, and after years of development the Unity Center will open at the California Museum.

Executive Director Amanda Meeker joins Insight to discuss the long and winding process of developing the Unity Center. Congregation B'nai Israel's Rabbi Mona Alfi joins to discuss the triple firebombing that motivated the Unity Center.

On Saturday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Unity Center will host a free block party and a civil rights panel discussion with Dolores Huerta of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Stuart Milk of the Harvey Milk Foundation, California State Sen. Holly Mitchell (D-30) and Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn moderated by Lisa Ling of CNN’s “This is Life with Lisa Ling."
