The powerful grizzly bear is one of California’s best-known symbols, but can no longer be found within the state’s borders.

A traveling exhibit at the California Museum chronicles the complex history of the state’s grizzly through artifacts and ephemera on loan from institutions including The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, the California State Library and the California Academy of Sciences.

“Bear In Mind: The Story of the California Grizzly” reveals the grizzly’s enduring cultural legacy over the last 200 years. The exhibit runs through June 19.

Digitization Specialist for the Library and Archives at California Academy of Sciences Kelly Jensen and California Museum Curator Bruce Stiney join us to talk more about this exhibit.

  • How Monarch was captured: The not-overly-truthful account of Monarch's capture by one of William Randolph Hearst's reporters.
