There’s a battle happening in North Auburn over the preservation of the buildings that make up the DeWitt General Hospital complex. The hospital was built for "semi-permanent" use during World War II and Placer County has slowly been demolishing many of its buildings over the years. But this past week the State Historical Resources Commission voted to put one of the buildings, the DeWitt Theater, on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic classification isn’t certain yet and it doesn’t save the building from demolition, but it could stall plans for a potential Costco to be built at the site. Joining Insight to explain what the historic status of the hospital means is Director of Public Works and Facilities for Placer County Ken Grehm.
