Ukraine’s newly-elected president, Petro Poroshenko, must navigate in a highly fluid political landscape in the near future. On the one hand, he faces expectations from pro-western Ukrainians for economic and political reforms and closer ties with the rest of Europe; on the other, he must contend with active, sometimes violent pro-Russian separatist militias in several cities in Eastern Ukraine. This Thursday, the World Affairs Council of Sacramento is hosting a conversation focused on Ukraine’s ongoing crisis, featuring Natalia Budaeva, a former country director at the International Republican Institute in Moscow, and Chester A. Newland, a Frances R. and John J. Duggan Professor Emeritus in Public Administration at the University of Southern California.
