Teresa Harbert's Classical Moment Tuesday, December 20, 2016 | Sacramento, CA Listen / Update RequiredTo play audio, update browser or Flash plugin. I’ve always loved the sound of the cello and even talked about learning to play it “someday.” Then for Christmas 2005, my husband, Dave, and my three boys surprised me with a cello. It took me a while to get up enough courage to begin taking lessons but I figured even 50-year-olds can learn to play cello. As I sat at my first lesson, doubts swirled stubbornly through my head. What if it’s too hard, what was I thinking, I’m just too old my silent self-talk whined. That’s when my teacher began to play and I hugged my instrument and listened, captivated by the smooth, rich sound. Incredibly, I felt my own cello vibrate in response to the tones floating so freely around me. I also felt my soul resonate just as my cello did and I knew without a doubt that I was born to play cello.
