Oak Fire smoke is hurting Sierra air quality, but Sacramento area could stay clear

  •  Mike Hagerty
Monday, July 25, 2022 | Sacramento, CA

Air quality on both sides of the Sierra has been poor after the fire, now more than 16,000 acres, started burning on Friday. The Reno-Sparks-Carson City area reported unhealthy air quality Monday.

“The Sierra has been impacted by smoke very heavily, and the Sierra Foothills,” said Cory Muller, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Sacramento. “The good news is we should see some improvement as we get increasing onshore winds.”

Winds are expected to clear out the smoke Tuesday and Wednesday, Muller said. Sacramento will also benefit from the Delta Breeze.

“The good news is we shouldn’t see a ton of smoke impacts here in the Sacramento area,” said Muller. “We might see some of the smoke aloft so it may look hazy at times. But we are expecting a really good Delta breeze and that is gonna help clear up any smoke we would see here.”

The breeze could even give folks in the foothills a bit of a breather, though it won’t be for long. A northerly flow of smoke is expected to return by the end of the week, which could mean more bad air for the Sierra and the foothills.
