As an unprecedented spree of wildfires unfurls without impunity across the West Coast, President Donald Trump reportedly will visit Sacramento on Monday to meet with firefighters and officials.
Trump also has scheduled a campaign rally in Reno on Saturday night.
Deputy White House Press Secretary Judd Deere said Trump will hold a debriefing with Cal Fire officials Monday in Sacramento’s McClellan Park, a former military base.
“Since mid-August, President Trump and Governor Newsom have spoken by phone and the White House and FEMA have remained in constant contact with State and local officials throughout the response to these natural disasters,” Deere said. “The President continues to support those who are battling raging wildfires in a locally-executed, state-managed, and federally-supported emergency response.”
This comes as the president plans to hold a rally in Nevada at the Minden-Tahoe Airport at 7 p.m. on Saturday, an event that comes after previously canceling a planned campaign gathering at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
Trump also has a scheduled campaign rally in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Wildfires have overwhelmed communities across California since mid-August, when an extreme heatwave and lightning storms sparked some of the largest blazes in state history.
The fires continued to rage in the subsequent weeks, expanding north into Washington and Oregon, where nearly half-a-million residents are under evacuation warning and thousands of homes and structures have burned.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday said he had a 30-minute phone conversation with Trump about the state’s wildfires. The two have eased off on political sniping in recent months to coordinate on the response to COVID-19.
After touring a portion of the North Complex West Zone, formerly known as the Bear Fire, Newsom sounded alarm bells about climate change Friday and pleaded with national and world leaders to take drastic action.
“California, folks, is America fast-forward,” he said. “What we’re experiencing right here is coming to communities all across the United States of America unless we get our act together on climate change.”
