A case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, was confirmed in Santa Clara County on Friday. It is the second of unknown origin in the United States, and both patients are being treated in California.
The Santa Clara County Public Health Department says the patient is an adult woman who was hospitalized for difficulty breathing. Authorities are working to determine all people the woman could have had contact with since falling ill.
The Washington Post first reported the new case, which was later confirmed by county health officials.
The first case of unknown origin — meaning one not connected to travel outside the country or another infected person — was detected at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento on Wednesday. That patient is from Solano County and first went to a hospital in Vacaville with flu-like symptoms more than a week ago.
CPDH Director Dr. Sonia Angell said Thursday there is no evidence the case being treated in Sacramento is connected to the group of people brought into Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, though the patient is a Solano County resident.
This would be the 63rd case of COVID-19 reported in the U.S., including those people repatriated from China and Japan.
