Former Kings Player Sued For $2 Million After A Person Living In The House He Rented Killed One And Shot Two Others

On August 23 three people were shot and one of them died at a home on Clover Ranch Road near Vineyard and Calvine in Sacramento County. Now, the person on the lease, former Sacramento Kings player Willie Cauley-Stein, is the defendant in a lawsuit filed by the owner of the home.

Samuel and Eva Rodriguez filed suit in Sacramento Superior Court alleging Cauley-Stein intentionally violated several sections of his lease agreement, which included a prohibition against subletting the home. The suit says his actions set the wheels in motion to have the people involved in the shooting on the property. 

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, someone living in the home called 911 and stated his roommate, Trey Devaughn Hallman, had shot him, was wearing body armor and was possibly armed with multiple firearms. When deputies arrived, they found three people had been shot, one of whom died.

The Rodriguezes say Cauley-Stein sublet the home, which was a violation of his lease, and allowed a firearm on the property, which was also a violation. They also contend that in the weeks prior to the shooting Cauley-Stein destroyed a hot tub, refused to care for the property, didn't pick up after the dogs and allowed people to use drugs in the home.

The suit says that cost them $200,000 in value as they were trying to sell the home at the time and cost them another $1 million when prospective buyers of the property backed out of an agreement after the shooting.
