Developer Proposes Co-Living Apartments In West Sac
An affordable housing project could soon be coming to West Sacramento. Developers want to build a 14-unit complex at what's now an empty lot in the city's Washington District. Sonya Sorich from the Sacramento Business Journal says the project's key focus will be "co-living."
"It's this idea of shared living spaces such as kitchens and lounges,” says Sorich. “As a result, the housing units are generally smaller and require lower rents."
The apartments would be around 400 square-feet or less. The project is called The Five Fifties, a reference to the site's address at 550 C Street. Developers say the apartments could open about a year after city officials sign-off on the project.
VSP Adding To Its Workforce
VSP, a vision insurance company based in Rancho Cordova, is adding jobs. The company has 2,800 employees in the Sacramento region and more than 5,000 throughout the country. Sorich says the company claims it usually sees about a 10 percent increase in the number of workers they have each year, and has been growing at that rate for the last decade.
"They currently have 55 open positions in Rancho Cordova, which is a mix of backfill and new full-time employees,” says Sorich. “That number is anticipated to grow."
The company says it's expanding its "retail strategy" among other areas. Not too long ago, VSP signed a two-floor lease at a Rancho Cordova office building near its existing headquarters. The company says it was in response to growth within VSP Global.
New Movie Theater Coming To Country Club Plaza
Arden Arcade's Country Club Plaza, one of Sacramento's oldest shopping centers, is counting on a boost in business with the addition of a new movie theater. Petaluma-based Cinema West is set to open a 13-screen auditorium next Thursday, April 25. Sorich says the project has been in the works for nearly five years.
"The hope is that more tenants will be interested in the center if it gets the increased activity that's expected to result from the movie theater, which has a capacity of around 1,300 people," says Sorich.
Country Club lost a lot of retailers during the Great Recession. New owners came in about four-years ago and gradually began adding new businesses including restaurants, a grocery store and a fitness club. The former Macy's space is still empty, but plans are underway to fill it with retail or some sort of entertainment use.
