Development Plans Suspended At Airport
Sacramento International Airport is suspending new development plans. Last year, the airport said it was looking for proposals to develop more than 120-acres of airport-owned property. The Sacramento Business Journal's Sonya Sorich says airport officials now want to step back and reevaluate possible uses for the land.
"Initially, the land was expected to be used for hotels, restaurants and other commercial development,” says Sorich. “But the airport now has its own operational needs. In a recent presentation, the new airport director said recent growth has put a strain on the airport's existing infrastructure, elements such as parking and the rental car area."
The airport-owned property includes 30 acres south of Interstate 5, and 98 acres north of the interstate and around the airport's main entrance. Despite the airport's decision to postpone development, there are still hotel construction projects in the works just east of the airport, including in North Natomas.
New Futures For Empty Toys R Us Sites
Empty retail spaces that used to be Toys R Us stores in the Sacramento area are getting new tenants. Hobby Lobby, the craft-supplies retailer, has signed a lease for a former Toys R Us space in Citrus Heights. And it looks like American Furniture Galleries will replace Babies R Us in Folsom. If that happens, American Furniture Galleries would join Ashley Furniture HomeStore in the shopping center. Sorich says it's more evidence that, even in an uncertain retail climate, some furniture stores are expanding.
"A lot of people want to touch and feel the furniture that they're buying before purchasing,” says Sorich, “So that kind of explains why we're seeing growth in the brick-and-mortar furniture industry."
Toys R Us went bankrupt last year and left several vacancies in the Sacramento area and beyond.
New Fitness Center Opens In The Hardin
The 700 block of K Street — which was once a dilapidated part of downtown Sacramento — continues to see new growth. It's now the site of a mixed-use project called The Hardin. And Sorich says this week a fitness studio opened there.
"This is a new locally owned indoor cycling studio called All City Riders,” says Sorich. “It joins several food and drink businesses that are open or in the works in the Hardin apartment and retail project.”
The new business intends to stand out from similar fitness studios by having the latest technology, including a giant screen where cyclists can see their own virtual avatar bike roll through places such as Greece.
