Tuesday saw a surge of women candidates winning elected office across the country. But the trend didn’t extend to California’s 4th District congressional race.

At an election watch party in Roseville Tuesday night, U.S. Rep Tom McClintock declared victory against democratic opponent Jessica Morse to serve a sixth term as District 4’s representative.

The district covers 10 counties including El Dorado, Calaveras, and Placer.

McClintock fought off a well-funded campaign against Morse, who raised $3.2 million, nearly double McClintock's total. Morse was attempting to join the 95 women who won House seats Tuesday, and add one more to a record-setting number of women in Congress in 2019.

More than 41 percent of voters in the district are registered Republicans, the highest percentage out of all California congressional districts.

At McClintock’s election party, residents living in the district said they supported him because he stands for conservative principles.

In his campaign, McClintock has taken a hard stance on immigration, including calling for a border wall. Last December he voted in favor of the $1.5 trillion Republican tax reform bill that was signed by Trump.

“The people in the Sierra Nevada understand the importance of freedom,” McClintock said. “They understand how these principles produce prosperity and opportunity for all.”

At her watch party in Roseville, Morse said that this is only the beginning.

“We are going to stand up and bring our communities together,” Morse said. “We have lived that example and we will keep living it. This is our mark on history. This is our gift to future generations.”
