In the market for a historic, 70,000-square-foot property? Stockton City Hall may be available soon.
Within a couple of years most departments that occupy the building will move into the Waterfront Towers in Downtown Stockton, which will serve as the new city hall. City leaders are looking for development proposals for the historic landmark.
Economic Development Director Micah Runner says the city is seeking ways to preserve the 92-year-old building by selling it or putting it to new uses.
“I think it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s preserved exactly how it is today, Runner said. "But I think providing some of that historic context and preserving the building for its historic value, but it’s very important to preserve the building.”
Runner says some ideas include a museum, art center, or non-profit. Due to the building’s historical status, changes must conform to federal standards and be approved in a public process with the city council.
He says the city council will determine its future in a public process.
