There are three strong reasons to see this Sacramento’s Music Circus rendition of "Gypsy."

To start, "Gypsy" is one of the great American musicals, with an absorbing story, and memorable songs. For the first time in years, Music Circus is staging the 1959 classic, and the show is a revelation for those who only know the film versions.

Second, this production features a star from Broadway, leading lady Carolee Carmello, whose work has earned three Tony nominations. She plays Rose, a tough, middle-aged mom with a relentless determination to turn her daughters into stars. It’s one of the supreme roles in American musical theater, and Carmello — who has a big voice and commanding stage presence — powers through the show like a force of nature.

Third, there is a slick, 19-piece band into the orchestra pit, apparently a record for the Music Circus. Their precise playing really drives this production.

This is only the second time in 30 years that the Music Circus has done "Gypsy." But it’s worth going out of your way to experience — or re-experience — this meaty, robust classic from Broadway’s Golden Age. It’s a musical with staying power, which theaters will still be staging decades hence.

The Music Circus production of "Gypsy" continues through Sunday, July 29, at the Wells Fargo Pavilion in Sacramento. You’ll find pictures of the show and more at CapRadio.org
