The Sacramento City Council approved a budget worth a little more than a billion dollars at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Funding for the budget shifted slightly from last year. Fees, taxes and services are expected to bring in more money than sales tax revenue, even though money from the sales tax generated a million dollars more than expected.
The budget includes 10 new positions within the city manager's office and two new positions for the homeless services program.
The city has set aside $8.5 million for pension liabilities and $2.5 million for a reserve account.
Six full-time firefighter paramedics will staff Station 4 In East Sacramento. Last year firefighters worked overtime to staff the station. Firefighters on overtime will staff Station 15 in South Natomas.
The budget forecast is for a surplus of $2.88 million at the end of the fiscal year. But, that doesn't account for increased costs that will likely come from a new firefighters' contract in December.
This is the final year for the $37 million generated annually by the half-cent Measure U sales tax. The council will take up a measure at the end of July to put a Measure U extension and half-cent increase before voters.
