Business Journal: Marijuana Business Park, Food Factory, The UV

Sacramento could soon be the home of a new marijuana business park. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich said if approved, the proposed project would be the largest local operation of its kind at more than 300,000 square feet.

"It would be a cannabis cultivation, production and manufacturing facility," Sorich said. "Its size would make it the largest such operation to open in the area since California voters approved legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in 2016. Because of its size it needs approval from the city's planning commission."

The business park would include 14 single-story buildings and several different tenants. Collectively those businesses could have more than 160 employees. The proposed site is in a mostly industrial area of southeast Sacramento on what's now empty land off of South Watt Avenue. The group behind the project is called Kaya Development.

First Batch Of Can Can Cocktails 

Can Can Cocktails, a Sacramento area-based beverage company, mixed its first batch this week at a new production space. It's the first major development for the space, known as Food Factory, which is envisioned as a food industry startup. Food Factory is at 15th and C streets on the north end of downtown.

"We haven't heard too much about other businesses that are planned for the project, which comes from Andrea Lepore of Hot Italian," Sorich said. "Can Can is in a separate private space, but a main feature of Food Factory is expected to be its communal and commercial kitchen that's designed for startups."

Can Can Cocktails used to make their drinks at Old Tavern Distillery in Sacramento and the Gold River Distillery in Rancho Cordova.

Edge Studios Joins University Village

Sacramento's revamped University Village shopping area at Howe Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard has a new business. It's a locally owned fitness studio called Edge Studios.

Attracting customers in the crowded fitness scene can be a challenge. But Sorich said the momentum of the revamped shopping center — rebranded as The UV — is working in the studio's favor.

"And then there's a lot of other unique twists," Sorich said. "You'll find a lot of those in its yoga studio, which includes bamboo flooring and a Himalayan salt wall. Needless to say, this place is different than your typical big-box gym. Single classes at Edge can cost between $19 and $24."

Other businesses at The UV include the restaurants Zócalo, Capital Beer and Tap Room and The Organic Coup.
