Stockton Receives $20 Million Donation For Financial Aid

Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs announced a $20 million donation that will make it possible to give financial aid to every college-bound student in the Stockton Unified School District next year. 

The mayor gave the news to more than 500 cheering high school students. Students from all of Stockton Unified high schools attended the presentation. 

Mayor Michael Tubbs told them tuition and fees will not be a barrier, that the funding will make community college essentially free for Stockton Unified’s class of 2019, and provide money for a four-year college as well.

 “A thousand dollars a year for four years, for all throughout your college experience and will make CSU tuition-free for the vast majority of you guys, and that’s why we’re here today,” Tubbs said. 

Kiley Harden hopes to graduate next year and says financial aid is a real need.

"It would just be extremely hard to go to college without the financial aid and it would be a struggle to focus on my studies and to pay for all my school stuff,” Harden said. 

Mayor Tubbs hopes to increase the Stockton Scholars fund to $100 million, providing financial assistance to students in all of the city’s school districts.
