California Democratic Party Leader Resigns Following Rape Accusation

  •  Bob Moffitt
Friday, December 15, 2017 | Sacramento, CA

A high-ranking California Democrat has been accused of raping a woman after last year’s California Democratic Party Executive Board Meeting.

Thursday a letter leaked calling for the ouster of Craig Cheslog as District 2 Director. The letter was authored Nov. 29, 2017. It says Cheslog acted in an “inappropriate and sexually aggressive manner” toward a party member a month ago at the Westin San Francisco Airport hotel.

The letter was co-signed by Party Chair Chair Eric C. Bauman, First Vice-Chair Alexandra Gallardo-Rooker, Bauman, Controller Dan Weitzman, and Vice-Chair Daraka Larimor-Hall.

The letter “triggered a reaction” from another party member who told Bauman she had been raped by Cheslog in November 2016, during the time the party was holding its executive board meeting.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting Cheslog has resigned his party position. The paper quotes his attorney Mary P. Carey as saying she is, "confident that a full and fair exploration of this matter, undertaken in an appropriate, fact-governed venue, would exonerate Mr. Cheslog.”

Cheslog’s district touches nine counties: Sacramento, Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo according to Cheslog’s LinkedIn page.

His page also lists him as a member of the Acalanes Union High School District Board of Trustees and the co-chair of California’s Statewide Arts Education Coalition.

He is also listed as the former Vice President of an advocacy group called Common Sense Kids Action as part of Common Sense Media.

The Los Angeles Times is also reporting Cheslog has been fired from his job with Common Sense.
