In Sacramento bicyclists can now ride up to one intersection near Sacramento State, tap a button and wait for the signal to change, just like pedestrians do.
Elizabeth Weeks with the Sacramento Department of Public Works says the new signal is part of the redesigned Carlson Drive Project near Sac State.
"The project included new sidewalks, crosswalks, marked green bike lanes, bike boxes, two stage left turns for bicyclists, upgraded signals to improve visibility and the city's first bike-only signal," says Weeks.
Jim Brown with Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates says the changes were needed.
"Students walking to and from class and housing and parking, you've just got a lot of action," Brown says. "You've got residents who are trying to get in and out of the neighborhood. So, what these improvements do is clarify where everybody needs to be in the street."
The City has plans to make similar improvements to an intersection across town on 12th Street where it becomes Highway 160.
