Officials In California's North Sue Over Giant Water Project

Friday, August 18, 2017 | Sacramento, CA

Department of Water Resources

(AP) - Northern California cities and counties are going to court to block what could be the state's costliest water project in history.

Stockton on Friday joined Sacramento County in suing the state over Gov. Jerry Brown's plans for two giant water tunnels. The $17 billion tunnels would divert part of the Sacramento River into massive underground pipes for cities and farms to the south and west.

Stockton's lawsuit accuses the state of trying to ram through a project it says would harm water supplies for the city and for local native species. Sacramento County filed a similar suit Thursday. Other local governments and environmental groups say they also plan lawsuits.

Spokeswoman Erin Mellon at California's Department of Water Resources says her agency does not comment on ongoing legal cases.
