Tuesday was the first day on the job for the new UC Davis chancellor Gary May.

May comes to Davis from Georgia Tech, where he was the dean of engineering for more than five years.

The UC Board of Regents selected May in the spring after former chancellor Linda Katehi resigned amid controversy.

May said he may work with the city of Sacramento to help resolve Davis' lack of affordable student housing.

"It's not fleshed out yet enough to be really discussed, only I'll say that we had a very good discussion with the mayor and some of the business leaders in the city," May said.

May is the university's first African American chancellor. He succeeds interim chancellor Ralph Hexter, Katehi's temporary replacement.

Meanwhile, Katehi will return to teach one engineering course a quarter and conduct research. She'll be paid $318,000.
