Daniel Hahn spent his first 23 years in law enforcement with the Sacramento Police Department. After running Roseville's police department for the past seven years, he is returning to Sacramento as its new Police Chief.

Sacramento City Manager Howard Chan said in a statement, “Not only does Daniel Hahn have a breadth of experience in law enforcement, he is well respected within the Sacramento Police Department and the community. I’m thrilled to be welcoming him back to lead one of the nation’s finest departments.”

Community relationships has been a focal point of complaints about the department in recent months in light of several officer-involved shootings.

“Our community made it clear that whoever the next police chief would be that a focus on community partnerships, collaboration, and neighborhood problem solving was essential. Daniel Hahn brings exactly that to Sacramento,” said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.

“Throughout my career, I have placed the highest priority on trusting relationships within the department and community, said Daniel Hahn. “It is a privilege and honor to accept this position to return home and serve our community and police department, of which I love.”

There are more than 1,100 sworn and civilian staff within the department.

Hahn will be sworn in at 3 p.m. on Friday, August 11, at California State University, Sacramento. Hahn is a Sac State alum.

After the ceremony, there will be a free community barbecue at McClatchy Park, with food, children’s activities and community resource information.

Hahn was offered the position at the end of June and he accepted. The move was not official until Hahn passed a background check.
