Mosquito control workers in the Sacramento area will increase trapping and monitoring now that the first two mosquito samples of the season have tested positive for West Nile.
One mosquito was found in southern Sacramento County. The second in northern Yolo County.
That's in addition to 10 dead birds that tested positive this year.
Luz Maria Robles is with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.
"We're seeing sort of a slow start to the season. But usually what happens is, once we start to see the first mosquito samples, obviously we also have the 10 birds, and then with the heat that we're going to be expecting for the next couple of weeks, we expect the activity to steadily increase," says Robles.
Last year there were 25 confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Sacramento County and 13 in Yolo County.
Precautions include using insect repellent, closing doors and windows around dawn and dusk, and draining any standing water.
