There’s a call underway to honor fallen law enforcement officers with a postage stamp. Among those leading the effort is Congressman Jerry McNerney (D - Stockton).
One hundred thirty-five police officers were killed in the line of duty last year, and over the last decade, the number has swelled to over 1,500.
McNerney wants to pay tribute to those fallen officers with a postal stamp that will also raise money for their families with the proceeds from the sales.
“I think it’s important nationwide to see some sort of program that will recognize the sacrifice that these men and women and their families have made.”
McNerney says similar stamps for breast cancer research and saving vanishing species have raised more than $87 million.
He has sent a letter endorsed by several police officer organizations to the Postmaster General asking for the issuance of such a stamp.
