Jesuit Grad Paralyzed During Cal Rugby Game

  •  Bob Moffitt
Tuesday, May 9, 2017 | Sacramento, CA

A college student from El Dorado Hills is in the hospital recovering from an injury that has left him paralyzed.

Robert Paylor plays Rugby for UC Berkeley and was carried off the field during Saturday's national championship match in Santa Clara.

The gofundme website says he had surgery Saturday evening.

A statement from his family says, "Robert is currently working on stabilizing his condition so he can start rehabilitation. The injury paralyzed his lower body with limited motion in his arms."

The statement goes on to say, "We are overwhelmed with the love and support we've received from people all over the country and ask that you continue to keep Robert in your prayers."

According to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the average expense for the first year with high tetraplegia can be about $1 million and with low tetraplegia, about $769,000.

The gofundme page has raised more than $115,000 so far.

Robert attended Jesuit High School and is a sophomore at Cal.

Rugby head coach Jack Clark issued this statement:

"Our team is devastated by Rob's injury. There aren't words to adequately explain our sorrow for what he and his family are going through. Rob is an extraordinary teammate, friend and student-athlete. As a University-recognized Scholar Athlete, he represents everything that is right and true about collegiate athletics. His challenges will be severe, long in duration and difficult beyond measure. Our team intends to be there with him every bit of the way."
