The Sacramento City Council Wednesday voted unanimously to create a $300,000 fund to pay for legal services for undocumented immigrants and their families.
Changes in federal immigration enforcement under the Trump Administration have made many undocumented residents fearful of deportation actions that could split up families.
District 6 Councilman Eric Guerra cited a California Endowment report on how much undocumented immigrants contribute to the local economy.
"In Sacramento County alone, nearly $60 million dollars come in tax revenue from a regressive sales tax to our general fund to operate our regional needs," said Guerra.
Sacramento is one of several California cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles developing legal aid funds to help undocumented residents.
