California schools can now ask their water supplier to test for lead on campus. This affects any school from kindergarten through 12th grade, both public and private.
Flint, Michigan served as a warning to everyone on the dangers of lead in the water system.
Starting this year, California schools can request their water agency to test their water on site at no cost.
California Water Service covers most of the state including customers in Stockton, Dixon and Marysville.
Sophie James is the Director of Water Quality for the company and says there are 734 school districts within its service area.
“The priority will be focusing on those schools that have reached out to us already," says James. "We’re supportive of any school that contacts us. We’ll be working with them and our plan is to fully support this program.”
James says the utility’s water is tested to be at a safe standard, but a school’s plumbing could be a source of lead contamination.
