Stanislaus Co. Deputy Responding To Call Killed

Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Wallace was killed Sunday, November 13, 2016, outside the City of Hughson, while responding to a call reporting a suspicious vehicle and person.

Update 11/14/2016, 6:50 p.m.: A Stanislaus County Sheriff Deputy was shot and killed yesterday while checking out a suspicious vehicle near Hughson. Deputy Dennis Wallace, 53, was shot twice within seconds of discovering the car was stolen and asking for backup. Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson says his officers and the community are grieving Deputy Wallace's death. 

"We will seek justice and justice will be done in this case. It’s time to stand united, it’s time to stand together with public safety and with law enforcement to stop what’s happening in our nation."

Christianson says 36-year-old David Machado was arrested about four hours later in Tulare County by officers after trying to steal a woman’s purse. Deputy Wallace is the fourth officer to die in the line of duty in the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

Update 2:30 p.m.: (AP) - Authorities say a man wanted in the killing of Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department says Deputy Dennis Wallace was shot and killed Sunday outside the city of Hughson while checking on a suspicious car.

The department says 36-year-old David Machado was arrested in Tulare County.

The department says it will have more information later Sunday.

Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson says Wallace, a 20-year veteran, was shot twice in the head near a fishing access spot outside the city of Hughson, about 10 miles southeast of Modesto.


Update 1:29 p.m.: The Stanislaus County Sheriff's department says David Machado, suspected of fatally shooting a sheriff's deputy Sunday, is now in custody.


 
Original Post: (AP) - Officials say a Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputy was killed while responding to a call about a suspicious car and person. The suspect is on the loose.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department says Deputy Dennis Wallace was shot and killed Sunday outside the city of Hughson.

The department says 36-year-old David Machado is suspected in the killing. Machado was last seen wearing a blue shirt and a blue and gray baseball cap.

The department says he carjacked a white 2009 Kia 4-door with a California license plate.

Machado is considered armed and dangerous.
