A parade of tiny homes on wheels has arrived in Sacramento as part of a construction competition at Cosumnes River College.
Sacramento State, UC Berkeley and Fresno State are among the schools that have each spent about $25,000 to build houses that are no larger than 400 square feet.
Jacobe Caditz is with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, a co-sponsor of the event.
"Imagine 10 tiny homes around a park-like area, kind of a central court, and customers and visitors are going to be able to come in and take a look at the tiny homes to see how each university sort of built them for their specific end-use environment and specific end-user," says Caditz.
He also says the competition provides schools with real-world science and engineering experience.
"A non-profit, community-owned public utility company isn't really interested in tiny houses per se. But, what we're really interested in is helping educate customers about making smart energy choices."
The homes will be judged on energy efficiency, landscaping and conservation of building materials.
Raley's has put up a $10,000 first-place prize.
The homes will be open for public viewing this Saturday.
