Nicole Rogers heads the Farm-to-Fork initiative for the Visitors Bureau. She'll lead students as they gain knife skills, visit local growers and an Elk Grove poultry farm.
"They're going to see what a livestock operation looks like," says Rogers. "And who they sell to and how they're raising their flock. And what is taking place to raise healthy birds."
Students will also stop by Yolo County's Del Rio Botanical - where they'll get a chance to taste fresh cactus.
"My hope is that when the kids leave that they realize, really acutely, that above all else, we're all eaters," says Rogers. "And the things we choose to put into our own mouths of what we're eating, there's a lot that goes behind what made that food possible."
