UC Davis Medical Center doctors are helping to train the staff of a new flying eye hospital that made a stop in Sacramento yesterday.
The eye care charity group Orbis says it's new aircraft is the world's only mobile eye-teaching hospital to help doctors treat the causes of avoidable blindness.
Doctor James Brandt heads UC Davis' Glaucoma Service. He says yesterday's training included the Med Center's state-of-the-art, computer-driven mannequin patients.
"Those mannequins were brought onto this brand new plane and we went through a variety of scenarios for the medical staff to learn how everything would work in the new hospital," Bradt explains. "This is a brand new hospital for the permanent staff of this organization so they needed to train on it and learn how everything might work."
The MC-10 aircraft landed at McClellan Airport yesterday. Orbis will fly the plane to four other U.S. locations this summer - including Dallas, Memphis and New York - before departing to China.
