Nevada Commerce Tax Repeal Petition Rewritten, But Faces Tough Odds

Friday, May 20, 2016 | Sacramento, CA

(AP) — A proposed ballot measure to repeal Nevada's new commerce tax has been rewritten after a major court setback.

Carson City Judge James Wilson approved new language for the RIP Commerce Tax petition on Friday. Opponents will be able to circulate the petition and attempt the difficult task of collecting more than 55,000 valid signatures by a June 21 deadline.

If they meet that threshold, the measure will go before voters in November.

The Nevada Supreme Court ruled last week that a petition to repeal the tax wasn't worded properly. The 20,000 or so signatures supporters had gathered over five months were invalidated.

The commerce tax was approved last year by the Republican-controlled Legislature. Opponents say it was a betrayal after voters roundly defeated a margins tax on the 2014 ballot.
