(AP) -- A charter school in the Sierra Nevada was closed Tuesday after an unvaccinated child was diagnosed with measles.
Yuba River Charter School says classes will resume Wednesday but students who can't prove immunity to measles can't return until April 8.
Nevada County health officials say the child was infectious while attending the school on March 17.
The highly contagious virus can cause a rash, fever and other symptoms. Young children and those with weak immune systems can face more serious complications or even death.
Authorities say vaccinations help reduce the risk of getting measles.
Nevada County has one of the lowest child vaccination rates in the state. Only about 43 percent of kindergarten students who entered school last fall had up-to-date vaccinations.
