Sacramento Regional Transit Rolls Out New Mobile App

Tyler Ward downloads the new Regional Transit mobile app.

You can now plan trips and pay fares on Sacramento’s Regional Transit system using a new smartphone app.

Tyler Ward takes RT from Carmichael to her job in downtown Sacramento.

“It’s cool that there’s an app now," says Ward. "If I don’t have change, I can just buy it on my phone. I literally have to leave my house eight minutes early every day because I always forget to get change. It’s like UBER, you put your debit card in and you just order it and you go -- that’s so easy.”

The mobile app is called “RideSacRT,” and is available on both Android and Apple platforms. Riders can plot routes and purchase single-ride fares and daily passes.

Ward’s been riding regional transit for about a year and says Sacramento is catching up with the high-tech transit services of the bay area.

"I’ve met lawyers and doctors and people you wouldn’t think would ride the light rail," says Ward. "They just don’t want to drive downtown, because it’s horrible."

After a six-month pilot period RT will roll out more features for the app.
