Gov. Brown Appoints New Secretary Of Corrections And Rehabilitation

Monday, December 28, 2015 | Sacramento, CA

California Governor Jerry Brown has appointed a new Secretary of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Today, the governor promoted undersecretary Scott Kernan. He previously served as a California prison warden and ran a consulting firm.

If confirmed by the Senate, Kernan would replace outgoing Secretary Jeffrey Beard. Beard was a critic of overcrowding whose most significant challenge was reducing prison populations.

Kernan would take over at a time when the state’s treatment of inmates is under scrutiny, after reports of systemic abuse of prisoners at a Northern California prison.
