UPDATE, Aug. 26 7 a.m.: The Sacramento City Council has approved a plan for the city to install a "Walk of Stars" project honoring famous people from Sacramento.

The project calls for large blue stars to be installed along stretches of sidewalks in the downtown and midtown areas of the city. The council adopted a resolution last night that approves the project and authorizes the city manager or a designee to review and approve candidates and locations selected for the stars.

The project has encountered some critics who say something representing the city's Gold Rush history would be more appropriate, but supporters believe the Walk of Stars would help boost local business and tourism.

Original Post: If the City Council approves the idea Tuesday night, Sacramento could have its own "Walk of Stars" to celebrate the achievements of people raised in the Sacramento region.

As early as next spring, some of Sacramento's most famous native sons and daughters would be honored with three-foot-wide stars on J, K and L streets near the downtown arena.

Lucy Eidam Crocker owns a public relations company and is one of the people behind the walk.

"We're just very excited about it. We think it's gonna be a lot of fun," says Crocker. "We think it's gonna be a great thing for the region, economic impact, a tourist attraction. One thing the Downtown Sacramento Partnership mentioned is that there's a lot of tours that kids do when they go down to the Capitol."

The California Hall of Fame claims 100,000 people visit annually. It's across the street from the Capitol.

Crocker says a new website would have information about each honoree.

"We hope it will be something where they might take school kids to go and look at all the stars, look up who they are, what they did, the contributions that they've made," she says.

A committee has already identified more than 80 people who are known nationwide or internationally and who have had a positive impact on the Sacramento region.

Publisher Eleanor McClatchy, investor Charles Schwab, the band Papa Roach, artist Greg Kondos and baseball player Dusty Baker are on the list of people who would be considered.

A non-profit organization will be created to raise money for the stars, each will cost $5,000. The stars would be made of the same material as those on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, terrazzo.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce estimates 10 million people visit its walk of fame every year.

Comment on Facebook: Whose name would you want to see on a Sacramento Walk Of Fame?
