(AP) - Nevada has received funding to bring on 290 AmeriCorps volunteers to serve at more than 60 nonprofits in the next year.
The Governor's Commission on Service announced Thursday that the state had received $1.6 million for the upcoming cycle that begins in September.
Volunteers will be placed in a range of nonprofits, including the Nevada Outdoor School, where they will offer after-school programs in rural Nevada. Others will carry out energy efficiency upgrades through the Governor's Office of Energy, and nearly 200 will help restore public lands through the Nevada Conservation Corps.
Sponsor organizations pay a portion of the cost for volunteers, while the federal government provides additional funding. Volunteers receive a small living allowance and a scholarship of nearly $6,000 if they successfully complete their service.
