Comic Book conventions are great places to pick up rare collectibles, see your favorite comic creators and celebrities and show off meticulously crafted costumes. Cosplay, as it's known, is simply the practice of wearing a costume of a character and "cons" are cosplayer's opportunities to share their creations with people who will appreciate the hard work that went into them.
Here's our round-up of some of the costumes from Friday afternoon at Wizard World.
White Girl Zelda and Princess Peach
Rhiannon Winkler and Colleen Crews dressed up as "white girl" versions of classic video-game dames. Starbucks in one hand and taking a selfie with the other, these ladies didn't have tickets to Wizard World, but they didn't want to miss the chance to dress up and pose for pictures outside the convention center.
Rocket The Racoon
Janae Martinez, 6, of Stockton, tied back her pig-tales and dressed a Rocket the Racoon mask from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Rainbow Dash
Caleigh Taylor says she's almost 10 and excitedly bounded from booth checking out the toys and books, her colorful tail flying behind her. She's dressed as Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony, Friendship Is Magic.
The Doctor(s)
Madelya, 8, and Genna Mehrer, 4, are dressed as the 11th and 10th Doctors from the long-running British time-travel show Dr. Who. It's their first con and while Genna is a little overwhelmed, Madelya is all about it.
"It's awesome," she says. "We came on Friday because it's going to be crazy on Saturday."
Gotham's Lady Villians And A Tiny Wonderwoman
Cons are a great place to meet your favorite heroes and villains. 6-year-old Amy Clem poses with the bad girls of Gotham while dressed as Wonder Woman.
Lori Michener (Poison Ivy) Kerrie Newton (Catwoman) and Kristina McLemore (Harley Quinn) all work together in Yuba City as an animal clinic.
An Artful Tank Girl (April O'Neal in the background)
Nadia Bunford, from Redding, isn't just showing off her full-metal rocket bra for her Tank Girl costume, she's also representing the Shasta Art Council.
Convention Ink
For some con-goers, their body is a permanent homage to their favorite icons of geek culture and Wizard Con is a great place to schedule time with their favorite tattoo artists. Zack Duncan is getting a large Darth Vader tattoo on his thigh from Reno tattoo artist, Mark McKinnon.
Duncan says the crowds walking by watching him get tattooed don't bother him.
"He was the right guy for the job," he says, plus it saved him a trip to Reno.
