June 5 is the House of Origin deadline in the Legislature. That’s the day bills must be passed out of the house where they started or die. The Senate has 218 bills to consider. The Assembly has 329.
Jack Pitney is a government professor at Claremont McKenna College. He says some bills are delayed until the last minute because they’re still being analyzed.
"But also there’s a political reason," he says. "It takes a log jam to log roll. And when you have a lot of bills pending all at the same time, that creates the opportunity for political agreements that are a little harder to achieve earlier in the year."
Members of each chamber are also meeting to combine their respective budget bills. The legislature must approve a state budget by June 15.
