Sam Shelton is with the Sacramento Area Council of Governments or SACOG . He says federal grants have already been secured to pay for most of the stations and 616 bicycles in Sacramento, West Sacramento and Davis.
"We estimate ridership will cover about half of our operating and maintenance costs," says Shelton. "The rest will come from sponsorships and advertising. We're projecting about $1 million or so in operating costs each year and we'll need about $600,000 to $700,000 cover those costs."
Shelton says cities in the bike share program could allow sponsorships on bike kiosks, the bicycles, and possibly in the name of the regional program.
The pilot program is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017.
A one-day bike rental could cost about seven dollars. An annual pass would cost $65.
