The Sacramento City Council Tuesday night voted to approve spending $5 million on the renovation of the old Fremont School For Adults on N Street.
The building will be used by several arts and community groups including the Sacramento Ballet and Capital Stage.
Local artists like Angela James spoke in support of the project. "I'm in favor of one umbrella where we can work together where we can teach together," James says.
One hundred seventy people donated a $500,000 and Joyce Raley Teal donated $1 million for the renovation.
The Fremont School was built in 1921 and closed three years ago.
The council also approved increases to the costs of garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup.
Outgoing Integrated Waste General Manager Steve Harriman says the increases will be implemented over the next three years. "It's a range of $2.41 to $2.68 per month for residential solid waste customers," Harriman says.
Harriman says the increases will pay for increasing disposal costs, fuel costs and improvements to the old city landfill.
Harriman is leaving the City of Sacramento's Department of General Services. He will become the Public Works Division Manager for the City of Rancho Cordova.
