Three hundred Elk Grove Unified School District students at Franklin High School and Franklin Elementary will be tested for tuberculosis next week.
The Sacramento County Department of Public Health says two children who attend the schools and a family member are being treated for active TB.
Dr. Olivia Kasirye is the county's heath officer and says antibiotics are effective, but a patient's liver must be healthy enough to process the drugs.
"The students that are we dealing with, because they are all young, and most of them are in good health, we don't anticipate that this will be an issue. But, when you're dealing with older people, you might get situations where someone might not be able to tolerate the medication," Kasirye says.
Most children will get a treatment plan that lasts 12 weeks. Adult treatment will take at least six months. The Department of Public Health will test students and staff who shared a classroom with the diagnosed students. Both students are currently isolated at home.
The County will hold a community meeting at the school Friday night.
These two cases are not related to the Florin High TB case reported last month.
