Firefighters Rescued After Being Trapped In South Sacramento Blaze

Monday, January 12, 2015 | Sacramento, CA

1:45 P.M.    Three Sacramento City firefighters are being treated for injuries sustained fighting a house fire at the corner of 22nd Avenue and 52nd Street.  All of the firefighters are being treated at UC Davis Medical Center. One of them has been admitted to the hospital's burn unit.

Corey Beams' family owns the home. He says no one was home at 6 a.m., when the fire started.

"It started in the basement, I guess it got the floor hot. So when the firefighters rushed into the house, two of them collapsed through the floor."

The fire department says the two firefighters made a mayday call at 6:34 this morning from the basement of the house.

Sacramento Fire Chief Walter White says one of the firefighters was able to get out of the basement by himself. His partner needed assistance.

The third firefighter was injured trying to help the other two.

"There are several homes in this neighborhood that have basement construction. Firefighting's a hazardous occupation and occasionally you may encounter situations that you may not anticipate."

Chief White says he spoke briefly with all three men after they were admitted to the hospital and that they were in good spirits.
