Sacramento Republic FC has asked Cal Expo to add an extra half-acre to its lease agreement.
The land would allow the team to expand the outdoor stadium. The team estimates an increase of about 2500 seats to 10,500 for next season.
If the Cal Expo Board approves the request, construction could begin in January 2015.
Republic FC's home-opener is likely sometime in mid-to-late March.
The Cal Expo Board will consider the request during a public hearing December 12 at 1 p.m.
Bonney Field seats 8,000 people. Expansion could allow the team to seat a maximum of 12,000.
Sight lines and access could limit the number of new seats installed.
