Bera Retains Seat In 7th Congressional District

  •  Bob Moffitt
Wednesday, November 19, 2014 | Sacramento, CA

Thurs. 6 A.M. -- (AP) -- Democratic Representative Ami Bera has won re-election to the seventh congressional district in the Sacramento area.

The challenger, Republican Doug Ose, congratulated Bera on the win.

Wednesday, 5 P.M. --  The Sacramento County Elections Office has released its latest vote count from the November 4th election.

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Ami Bera now leads Republican challenger Doug Ose by 1432 votes in the 7th District Congressional race.

Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine says perhaps only "one or two" provisional ballots from Congressional District 7 remain to be counted.

The Associated Press has called the race in favor of Bera.

About 4300 ballots from the rest of the county must also be counted.

"We're processing those as we speak and we will have another update on Friday and we should be able to certify about Tuesday after we make sure all of the precincts have been accounted for," says LaVine.

Bera's campaign released the following statement. "It's been my honor serving this community as a doctor for the last nineteen years, and I am grateful I will have the opportunity to continue serving as the representative for California's 7th Congressional District in Congress."

At one time, Ose led Bera by 3,000 votes.

The elections office has been counting vote-by-mail and provisional ballots for the past week.

Provisional ballots are cast when a voter's name is not on the list of registered voters at a polling place.

Nearly 326,000 ballots have been counted in Sacramento County.

LaVine expects to certify the election by next Tuesday.
