California has not had a case of Ebola, but public health officials say they've been working with hospitals to make sure they're prepared. Democrat Richard Pan chairs the Assembly Health Committee. Pan, who is a physician, held an informational hearing today on California’s Ebola preparedness. He says any plan must consider people’s concerns about the disease.
"There is the more medical science part of it," he says. "But there is also the part about ensuring we communicate to the public about the disease and help allay people’s fears about the condition."
California public health officials say the state does not get many visitors from Ebola-affected countries. Currently 26 returning travelers, including two healthcare workers, are being monitored in 12 California counties. The majority are considered at low risk of having the disease.
