El Portal Fire Nearly Contained At 4,700 Acres

Monday, August 4, 2014 | Sacramento, CA

By CapRadio.org Staff

Latest El Portal Fire Update

Fire officials say the El Portal Fire is 96 percent contained as of early Monday. The fire, which started July 26 as the result of an abandoned camp fire, has burned 4,989 acres, with about three-fourths of those in the Stanislaus National Forest. The fire also burned 1,093 acres inside Yosemite National Park.

The only areas still burning are within the fire's permiter.

Fire crews will reporting to a fire camp at Drew Meadow starting Tuesday. This camp is close to the burn area, and repaces the command post at Badger Pass. As of Monday morning, there were 434 personnel assigned to the incident.

Many of the crews that had been working the El Portal Fire are now assigned to the Dark Hole Fire, which stood at 770 acres and 61 percent containment as of Monday afternoon.
