The Pacific Fishery Management Council says it looks like it will be a good year for Sacramento fall run Chinook salmon.
Commercial fishing between Point Arena and Pigeon Point for Sacramento River Chinook Salmon will likely run from May through September with two weeks off in July.
Mike Burner with the council says there are an estimated 600,000 salmon preparing to return to fresh water.
"The 600,000 range is by no means a record. We've seen that index over a million. So, it's a reasonable number. It's definitely the stock that most of the fisheries in California and Oregon rely on."
Burner says a record number of coho salmon could return to the Columbia River in Oregon this year.
But, the numbers are down significantly for the Klamath River fall Chinook. Only about 300,000 salmon are in the ocean. Burner says a shorter season has been proposed as a result.
"Klamath are an important stock for pretty much every fishery south of Cape Falcon, Oregon. So, everyone had to kind of tighten their belts a little bit as numbers are down from recent years."
The National Marine Fisheries Service is expected to approve the recommendations May first.
